What is North Carolina Quilt Symposium, Inc.

The North Carolina Quilt Symposium, Incorporated, is a non-profit corporation that was formed after the first North Carolina Quilt Symposium in Raleigh in 1979.  At the time of its formation, its primary purpose was to insure the continuation of an annual quilt symposium, but its purpose as stated in its charter, "to promote and perpetuate the art of quilting through regularly sponsored symposia within the state of North Carolina and to sponsor other projects designed to preserve, continue, and advance this art form in the direction of the Board of Directors", has allowed it to broaden its scope.

The NCQSI has no members.  Its work is done by a board of directors of twenty-one members elected from throughout the state.  There are no paid staff members.  All directors are volunteers.  They receive mileage reimbursement at the going rate for travel to and from meetings.  Sole financial support for the board comes from a percentage of the net proceeds from each symposium.

The NCQSI is responsible for the selection of the site for each North Carolina Quilt Symposium (usually two years in advance) and provides $3,000.00 seed money to the hosting guild.  There is a Symposium Advisory Committee which offers planning assistance to the host guild.  It now has a complete symposium guidelines manual.

Some current and past projects undertaken by the NCQSI include:

  1. Cosponsoring, with the North Carolina Museum of History, the North Carolina Quilt Project.
  2. Substantial monetary support of the NC Quilt Project.
