Summer 2003

Under the Magnolias
Symposium 2003–Raleigh, NC

When you think of a Silver Anniversary, what comes to mind? Fun, special times, great memories, seeing old friends, etc. That's just what Symposium 2003 was - and more!! Jane Hall, Roberta Miller-Haraway and the Capital Quilters outdid themselves to put on a symposium to remember.

Symposium 2003 was held at Peace College in Raleigh, NC, a beautiful campus "Under the Magnolias." The 25th anniversary of symposium was a great success to say the least:

  • 418 total full times students - 290 boarding and 128 day
  • 100 part-time day students
  • 5 students from the UK, 2 from Sri Lanka
  • 20 teachers
  • 18 vendors
  • a new chef (well-seasoned vegetables)
  • new classroom building with elevator
  • AND...the magnolias bloomed!!!

In addition to the wonderful classes offered, there were evening lectures by Bethany Reynolds, Judy Murrah and Katie Pasquini-Masopust. Also offered were trips to the North Carolina Museum of History and the Page-Walker Art Center.

The quilt show was a great success with 235 entries. There were also special exhibits: blocks made by the NCQSI board to represent each year of symposium; the first symposium raffle quilt ( made by Capital Quilters); NC Museum of History patterns; 25th anniversary symposium quilt challenge; Georgia Bonesteel's Americana Bibs and Medallion quilt; a quilt by Gladys Baker, a founding member of Capital Quilters; and an exhibit by quilters from Sri Lanka.
